Transcriptomics analysis of Psidium cattleyanum Sabine (Myrtaceae) unveil potential genes involved in fruit pigmentation Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vetö,Nicole M.; Guzman,Frank; Kulcheski,Franceli R.; Segatto,Ana Lúcia A.; Lacerda,Maria Eduarda G.; Margis,Rogerio; Turchetto-Zolet,Andreia C..
Abstract Psidium cattleyanum Sabine is an Atlantic Forest native species that presents some populations with red fruits and others with yellow fruits. This variation in fruit pigmentation in this species is an intriguing character that could be related to species evolution but still needs to be further explored. Our goal was to provide genomic information for these morphotypes to understand the molecular mechanisms of differences in fruit colour in this species. In this study, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis of red and yellow morphotypes of P. cattleyanum, considering two stages of fruit ripening. The transcriptomic analysis performed encompassing leaves, unripe and ripe fruits, in triplicate for each morphotype. The transcriptome...

Genetic structure and gene flow in Eugenia dysenterica DC in the Brazilian Cerrado utilizing SSR markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Zucchi,Maria Imaculada; Brondani,Rosana Pereira Vianello; Pinheiro,José Baldin; Chaves,Lázaro José; Coelho,Alexandre Siqueira Guedes; Vencovsky,Roland.
The ''cagaita tree'' (Eugenia dysenterica) is a plant found widespread in the Brazilian Cerrado. Its fruit is used for popular consumption and for industrial purposes. This study opens a new perspective for the generation of population genetic data and parameters estimates for devising sound collection and conservation procedures for Eugenia dysenterica. A battery of 356 primer pairs developed for Eucalyptus spp. was tested on the ''cagaita tree''. Only 10 primer pairs were found to be transferable between the two species. Using a polyacrilamide gel, an average of 10.4 alleles per locus was detected, in a sample of 116 individuals from 10 natural ''cagaita tree'' populations. Seven polymorphic loci allowed estimation of genetic parameters, including...

Complete sequence and comparative analysis of the chloroplast genome of Plinia trunciflora Genet. Mol. Biol.
Eguiluz,Maria; Yuyama,Priscila Mary; Guzman,Frank; Rodrigues,Nureyev Ferreira; Margis,Rogerio.
Abstract Plinia trunciflora is a Brazilian native fruit tree from the Myrtaceae family, also known as jaboticaba. This species has great potential by its fruit production. Due to the high content of essential oils in their leaves and of anthocyanins in the fruits, there is also an increasing interest by the pharmaceutical industry. Nevertheless, there are few studies focusing on its molecular biology and genetic characterization. We herein report the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. trunciflora using high-throughput sequencing and compare it to other previously sequenced Myrtaceae genomes. The cp genome of P. trunciflora is 159,512 bp in size, comprising inverted repeats of 26,414 bp and single-copy regions of 88,097 bp (LSC) and 18,587 bp (SSC). The...

Population ecology of the multivoltine Neotropical gall midge Eugeniamyia dispar (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mendonça, Jr.,Milton de S.; Romanowski,Helena P..
Our understanding of the population ecology of insect gallers is largely built on examples from temperate zones, but tropical and subtropical gallers may present distinct patterns of abundance and distribution across time. Eugeniamyia dispar Maia, Mendonça & Romanowski, 1996 is a multivoltine Neotropical cecidomyiid that induces spongy leaf galls on Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae). Galls were censused in the urban area of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil on six plants at two sites, for two years, at roughly weekly intervals. Overall 9,694 eggs, galling attempts and galls were counted. New galls continuously appear on developing leaves, but galls with live inducers are absent from June to at least early August. Galls on a same shoot develop...

Two new species of Metrosideros (Myrtaceae) from New Caledonia: dual characterisation with morphology and nrDNA sequence variation Naturalis
Dawson, John W.; Whitaker, Anthony H.; Whitaker, Vivienne A.; Gardner, Richard C.; Wright, Shane D..
We have identified two new species of Metrosideros subg. Mearnsia (Myrtaceae) growing on, and apparently endemic to, the massif known as the Roches d’Ouaïème in New Caledonia. Of these two species, we include M. whitakeri in sect. Mearnsia and M. rotundifolia in sect. Calyptropelala. Both morphological assessments and phylogenetic analyses based on nrDNA sequence variation produced congruent interpretations of the novelty of the new species and of their classification.

Pollen of Syzygium (Myrtaceae) from SE Asia, especially Thailand Naturalis
Parnell, J..
Pollen of 57 species of Syzygium from SE Asia were surveyed by SEM. The grains are all ± triangular in polar view, uniformly small (mean diameter 10.4 μm) with few surface sculpturing features. All species examined exhibit a distinct apocolpium and, usually, apocolpial field. The presence of an apocolpial field cannot be linked to any known taxonomic grouping within the genus. It does not appear possible to distinguish the species of Syzygium on the basis of features of the pollen visible under SEM, though section Jambosa tends to have larger pollen with a proportionally larger apocolpium than species not in that section. Estimates for the number of pollen grains per stamen in species with larger pollen grains (± section Jambosa) are 5× as great as for...

The genus Syzygium (Myrtaceae) in Vanuatu Naturalis
Tuiwawa, S.H.; Craven, L.A.; Sam, C.; Crisp, M.D..
Twenty species of Syzygium occur in Vanuatu of which eighteen are indigenous (six being endemic and one being an ancient introduction) and two are recently introduced. Three species are newly described: S. chanelii, S. flabellum and S. vanuatuense. The Syzygium flora of Vanuatu has strong links at species level to that of the Solomon Islands and Fiji, less strong links to elsewhere in the southwest Pacific and apparently no links to New Caledonia. Descriptions are provided for each species occurring in Vanuatu and identification keys are provided for flowering and vegetative material.

South Pacific Cleistocalyx transferred to Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Biffin, E.; Craven, L.A.; Tuiwawa, M.; Crisp, M.D.; Gadek, P.A..
Evidence from both morphological and molecular phylogenetic data support the view that the circumscissile calycine calyptra, the sole defining character of Cleistocalyx, has multiple origins within Syzygium s. l. and is therefore an invalid basis for generic circumscription. Accordingly, the Fijian Cleistocalyx are transferred to Syzygium, and the new combinations Syzygium decussatus, S. eugenioides and S. seemannii, are made. Syzygium myrtoides is reinstated, and Cleistocalyx ellipticus, C. longiflorus, C. kasiensis and C. seemannii var. punctatus are reduced to the synonymy of S. seemannii. The distribution of S. seemannii is extended to Vanuatu.

Phylogeny and host-plant relationships of the Australian Myrtaceae leafmining moth genus Pectinivalva (Lepidoptera, Nepticulidae), with new subgenera and species Naturalis
Hoare, R.J.B.; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
The phylogeny of the mainly Australian nepticulid genus Pectinivalva Scoble, 1983 is investigated on the basis of morphology, and a division into three monophyletic subgenera is proposed on the basis of these results. These subgenera (Pectinivalva, Casanovula Hoare, subgen. n. and Menurella Hoare, subgen. n. ) are described and diagnosed, the described species of Pectinivalva are assigned to them, and representative new species are described in each: P.
